Having left work late today, I stopped by the sub shop and then walked my usual quick pace to Fry's for a stop by the ATM. I'm minding my own business, grabbing my wallet out of my purse, when I happen to glance over and see. . .

At first, I think it must surely be a fluke. I make a mental note of the day, realize it is in fact only October 2nd, after all. And then notice the cardboard card display is red with shiny silver snowflakes. I look a little further up and to the right and see. . .

I even say out loud "You've gotta be kiddin' me! It's only October 2nd for crying out loud!" I mean what are these retailers trying to pull? Do they really think putting Christmas stuff out this early is going to help increase their sales?
I've done pretty well with downsizing Christmas the last three years. I stopped sending Christmas cards 4 or 5 years ago. I'm down to the tree, some decorations, and in the last year hub and I downgraded to small, simple gifts for each other - or "shared" gifts of something that we both want. IF we give gifts to family members, we do small gifts or homemade gifts. And I? LOVE it!
I wrote down the date of February 14 today and thought about how I have completely done away with that manufactured holiday of "love" for . . . oh, like ever, now. I'm beginning to think I should boycott Christmas too. I really loathe all the commercialism. It kinda ruins it for me. I'm thinking of not buying a real tree this year. It would be the first year in 3 that I didn't. Hmmmm.
What would you do away with if you downsized, downgraded or otherwise boycotted all forms of conspicuous consumption previously known as "Christmas"?

oh no! i saw the christmas cards in the store and got excited! i love christmas! way over commercialized I know. I agree. But... I love the tree. I love the cards. I love the family dinners and gift exchanges. I love watching the kids sitting on Santa's knee. And driving around at night looking at Christmas lights.
The thing that bothers me the most are the new Christmas movies and books that have nothing to do with the Savior. That bothers me.

It's funny but I'm doing the opposite of you - I never send cards and this year, by golly, I'm determined to send cards! Partly because for the first time in our marriage we can actually afford to, and partly because I just love receiving them.
I might even, gasp, write a Christmas form letter! Alright, this is just freaky.
Hahaha! I don't mind the whole Christmas thing with the exception of a few things. First is the pressure of Christmas: "So-and-so bought me (or my kids) a gift so I HAVE to return the favor"...."Last year was spent with (so-and-so), so we have to see (so-and-so) this year", etc. The other thing is the darn Christmas music that they start playing in early November. Don't get me wrong, I have my favorites- but do they really have to start in with the music so early? I mean by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, I am so sick of hearing 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' that I could pull out my hair!! Please just let us get through one holiday before you start shoving another down our throats!!
Miranda, that's exactly how I feel!! I feel like nobody appreciates Thanksgiving. Just because you don't get presents or buy anything but food for it doesn't mean it's not important!!
I LOVE Christmas, but I also love Thanksgiving and everything it means! I wish retailers would stop with the Christmas before Halloween stuff!
