Having left work late today, I stopped by the sub shop and then walked my usual quick pace to Fry's for a stop by the ATM. I'm minding my own business, grabbing my wallet out of my purse, when I happen to glance over and see. . .

At first, I think it must surely be a fluke. I make a mental note of the day, realize it is in fact only October 2nd, after all. And then notice the cardboard card display is red with shiny silver snowflakes. I look a little further up and to the right and see. . .

I even say out loud "You've gotta be kiddin' me! It's only October 2nd for crying out loud!" I mean what are these retailers trying to pull? Do they really think putting Christmas stuff out this early is going to help increase their sales?

I've done pretty well with downsizing Christmas the last three years. I stopped sending Christmas cards 4 or 5 years ago. I'm down to the tree, some decorations, and in the last year hub and I downgraded to small, simple gifts for each other - or "shared" gifts of something that we both want. IF we give gifts to family members, we do small gifts or homemade gifts. And I? LOVE it!

I wrote down the date of February 14 today and thought about how I have completely done away with that manufactured holiday of "love" for . . . oh, like ever, now. I'm beginning to think I should boycott Christmas too. I really loathe all the commercialism. It kinda ruins it for me. I'm thinking of not buying a real tree this year. It would be the first year in 3 that I didn't. Hmmmm.

What would you do away with if you downsized, downgraded or otherwise boycotted all forms of conspicuous consumption previously known as "Christmas"?
