I tried out for Oprah, False Prophetess, the other day. She had an open call for people who have opinions about the FLDS polygamy raid in Texas. I know I'll never make it, but a girl can dream....
The polygamy raid in Texas is tragic on many levels. I am mostly concerned with the children in this case because it seems like they can't win. If they are being abused, it is tragic, and if they were taken from their families without cause, it is also tragic.
I have followed the polygamy case with interest because I am personally invested. I consider my family to be the product of polygamy because it was practiced by my ancestors and my husband's ancestors more than 100 years ago.
I am a member in good standing of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I am proud of my heritage. I think many people would hesitate to tell you that polygamy is part of our doctrine, however because we obey the laws of our country we do not practice it.
When I consider polygamy on a personal level, I am horrified at the thought of sharing my husband. However, I know that without polygamy I would not exist and I am prone to sympathy for the FLDS community because they are attempting to worship in the manner they think is best. I do not condone the repression of women, but as someone who has been considered repressed in the past, I also know that the label "repression" is completely subjective.
I would love to be on the Oprah show and discuss this matter further.
If you want to try to win a free trip to Chicago, this link will take you to the "audition" form. I get to be your other person if you make it, okay?

This is a very fascinating topic to me because there are so many different levels to consider.
For what its worth, I, too, have ancestors who had multiple wives. In fact, one of our local CES guys for the institute has the same great-great-great grandfather as I do, but the Great (etc) grandmother was different from mine. Very interesting to hear discussions on perspectives from that lineage.
I think that polygamy back in the day was vastly different from what it is now. Now, it seems more of a situation where children are being victimized at the hands of the men who are running the show.
Interestingly, when the story broke, I was supportive of the raid- 'go in and save her', I thought. Then when they discovered that it might have been a hoax, I thought it tragic. But the government now has (in my opinion) taken advantage of the situation and has prolonged the removal of the children- not returning them to their homes. Then I thought to myself that this was terrible and the govt. was in the wrong... but with all the age verification and paternity testing done, I am back at the other swing of the pendulum.
Like I said, very interesting and fascinating topic of discussion. I won't bother auditioning, though. I most certainly cannot afford being on camera and having an extra 10 pounds added to my image. :)
Hope you make it Celia! You're practically famous already! And, I'd love to see you with Oprah.
I got a call from Oprah's people once. For one of her I'm fat and miserable shows. I blubbered on the phone though and they never called back.
Good luck! I think...~lol~
sorry, didn't spell check. I have banned myself from ever watching Oprah, but if you were on, I would break my own rules, just to see you. It would be nice to see a fair, and rational take on the situation from someone with in the church, and the fact that you are so gosh darn funny would be a bonus. Good luck.
Hmmmm, no Lenore on there. Is it because she works? No one wants a sister wife who works.
If you make it, I'll watch Oprah just that one time. I think it would be great to have you there since you have such a great way of expressing yourself.
They'd be CRAZY not to take you. You would be perfect. The perfect balance between entertaining (even though it isn't a light topic) informative and truthful. Go get em girl!!!
I wish we could vote for you to get on Oprah. You would totally win. Will you jump on the couch if you are on!
Hello, what happened to me as a sister wife? Or are we just BFF?
Um, I was too on there. Opposite Ellie. Once again, Ellie and me confused.
I don't understand what all the ladies have in common. We all want to be poly wives? We are all the product of polygs?
My husband asked me to go and find a sister wife the other day. My jaw dropped because I had NO idea he even knew what that meant. LOL
Celia,
I hope you get a chance to be on Oprah. I will be cheering you on from the comfort of my sofa!
I know this topic is very dear and close to your heart and I hope you'll get a chance to be on the show to voice your opinions.
I am not knowledgeable enough to know much about polygamy to even discuss it in full detail.
Good luck!
I was contacted by Oprah's show about 20 years ago, the topic was Shaken Infant Syndrome. They wanted me to bring Rachel, I declined not wanting her to be part of a "freak" show. I missed my 15 minutes. Funny thing, I don't even know how they found me. I am not a fan of hers AT ALL.
But I will watch and root for you if you make it on!!!
Celia! Celia! Can't wait to C-ya! On Oprah!
I am totally going with you if you get on the show. You would be so awesome. I hope she calls you....
Go Celia! Go Go Go Celia! Will you wear your hair in a bun? I have a pioneer dress I can send you.
Oh! How I hope you make it on the show.
I truly hope you make it, Celia! You would truly represent what a member in good standing, with a strong testimony of the gospel, and a compassionate understanding of why the FLDS live the way they do, without being judgmental or holier than thou. I REALLY am hoping you get picked!!!!!
You would be perfect on that show! I hope you get on. Keep us posted. I would even watch Oprah just for you and its been many years since I've tuned into her.
Go Celia!
I'm not a fan of Oprah... but if were on, I'd watch.
I hear if you jump on the sofa on that show, you get really famous. Just a tip for when you make the show. :)
She is totally going to call you!
You would be great!
Tell her to read your blog...
Take Sheri Dew with you.
That would be AWESOME.
You would be the perfect guest, eloquent, smart, funny. And you would have the most fans!!!!
That would be awesome to see you on Oprah. You'd be able to articulate yourself and everything. I'm only good at that when there's no pressure whatsoever. I'm rooting for you!
